Why hardwood needs attention as the weather turns
Late October is when most Triad homes switch from open windows to the heat. Hardwood is a natural material, and it responds to the air around it. As the indoor air dries out through the heating season, boards can shrink slightly and show thin gaps, and a finish that was already worn gets less forgiving. Fall is a good moment to look at your floors closely, because the holidays are coming and the rooms you want to show off are the ones that get the most foot traffic.
What we look for when we walk your floors
Dull paths and worn spots
The finish on a hardwood floor is the layer that takes the abuse, not the wood itself. Check the hallway, the front entry, the kitchen and the spot in front of the sofa. If those areas look dull or hazy compared with the corners of the room, the finish is wearing thin.
Scratches that catch the light
Stand at the far side of the room and look across the floor with a window behind you. Scratches and scuffs show up clearly from that angle. Light surface wear can often be handled without taking the floor back to bare wood, while deeper damage calls for a full refinish.
Damaged or loose boards
Pay attention to boards that are cracked, lifting or sound hollow underfoot. We handle patching and repair of damaged boards as part of our work, and it is much easier to deal with before a refinish than after it.
Buff and coat, or sand and refinish?
Not every floor needs the same treatment, and the right choice depends on what we find when we see the floor. In broad terms, there are two routes.
- Buff and polyurethane coat: for floors where the finish is dull or lightly scratched but the wood underneath is in good shape. We buff the surface and apply fresh polyurethane finish coats.
- Sand and finish: for floors with deeper wear, damage or a color you want to change. We sand back to clean bare wood, stain to the color you choose, and build the finish up again.
You can read more about everything the process covers on our hardwood floor refinishing page. If you are not sure which route fits, describe the floor to us and we will tell you what we think it needs.
Why fall timing works well for many homeowners
Refinishing means the room is out of use for a short stretch while the finish sets, so it helps to plan around your calendar. Booking before the busiest part of the holidays gives you time to get the work done, let the finish settle and move furniture back before guests arrive. We would rather you call early and talk it through than rush a floor at the last minute.
Getting the room ready
A little preparation makes the job smoother. Clear the room of small items and breakables, and think about where furniture can sit during the work. We protect what is around the work and leave the room ready to use when we finish. Tell us about any areas you are concerned about, such as a spot with a repair history or boards that already feel loose.
Hardwood work across the Triad

If you are in one of those areas, take a look at our pages for Stokesdale, Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem. If your floors need more than a refinish, such as new boards or a different surface, our flooring installation team can supply and install the flooring too.
Our no call back approach
We pride ourselves on a no call back approach, which means we prep and finish each job so there is nothing to return for. For a hardwood floor, that starts with an honest look at what the floor really needs, not just the quickest route.
